The Ghent Neighborhood League’s Current Fundraising Focus

The Ghent Neighborhood League, under the leadership of GNL Treasurer and Project Director Bob Kelly, is working with the city of Norfolk and the Virginia Department of Forestry to prepare a grant application for a cost-reimbursable project under the Virginia Trees for Clean Water program. We are proposing that GNL and Norfolk Master Gardener Association volunteers plant trees and shrubs at three locations along the Hague, between the seawall and the public walkway. The purpose of the trees would be to reduce runoff and erosion into the Hague after high-tides and storm events. Our proposal requests reimbursement of our out-of-pocket costs. In return, GNL will source the trees and shrubs, transport them to the planting sites, and put them in the ground. Since this is public land, we propose all maintenance of the plant locations be performed by the City of Norfolk. We estimate about $4,500 will be required to purchase the plant material and miscellaneous items such as stakes, plant watering bags, etc. Because this is a cost-reimbursable project, we will need donations to ensure the treasury has enough up-front money. We are targeting late October to purchase the plants and do the actual plantings.
