Great News! Beautification Initiative Success!!

The Ghent Neighborhood League, under the leadership of GNL Treasurer and Project Director Bob Kelly, worked with the city of Norfolk and the Virginia Department of Forestry to prepare a grant application for a cost-reimbursable project under the Virginia Trees for Clean Water program. We proposed that GNL and Norfolk Master Gardener Association volunteers plant trees and shrubs at three locations along the Hague, between the seawall and the public walkway. The purpose of the trees is to reduce runoff and erosion into the Hague after high-tides and storm events. Our proposal requested reimbursement of our out-of-pocket costs. In return, GNL will source the trees and shrubs, transport them to the planting sites, and put them in the ground. Since this is public land, we propose all maintenance of the plant locations be performed by the City of Norfolk. We estimate about $4,500 will be required to purchase the plant material and miscellaneous items such as stakes, plant watering bags, etc. The Proposal was approved and we are planting the plants on Saturday, December 16th at 8am. Volunteers Needed!!!!!

We’re meeting at the corner of mowbray Arch and Fairfax to begin the dig, and hope it will be done by late morning. Please reach out to volunteer at adimn@ghentneighborhoodleague.org

We’ll see you there!
